pencil on paper

Paul Herrmann (Munich 1864 - 1946 Berlin-Schöneberg)

Zeit, Chronos mit seiner Sense, (Time, Chronos with his Scythe),

a preliminary study for the mezzotint "Zeit" ["Time"] (Singer 155), part of Herrmann's 6-print series Phantasien.

circa 1913

pencil on handmade paper

52.9 x 39.6 cm

signed and inscribed lower right: "Zeit / Paul Herrmann".

Chronos walks with a raised foot over debris, including human and animal corpses, and readies his scythe to deliver a massive blow. The drawing here still shows the "Young Life," a child who is enthroned on the shoulders of Chronos, but Herrmann ultimately deletes the child from the final version of this work.
