German painter, graphic artist, architect, designer, educator, writer, and socialist Heinrich Vogeler belonged to the first generation of the Worpswede artists' colony:

"What distinguishes Heinrich Vogeler from other artists of Art Nouveau and Symbolism is the carefree, fairytale quality of his imagery with its great narrative skill.  These fairytale images share an emphasis on a world of feeling in which mysterious events unfold." (Quote: Hans H. Hofstätter, "Symbolism and Art Nouveau in the paintings and graphic works of Heinrich Vogeler," 1992, www.heinrich-vogeler.de) (English translation)
